Maui 2014!

Elly, Lily, Mom, Thomas, and I went to Maui for a vacation at the end of my paternity leave

Friday, 17 October through Monday 27 October 2014

1: It took a lot of planning and co-ordination, but it's finally happening! We're officially on the plane and ready for takeoff!

2: Early on the first day, Thomas and I took Lily down to the beach to show her the ocean. It was a little rough that day (Hurricane Ana was just leaving town), and Lily was not impressed with the surf.

3: After arriving, getting the car, finding the rental condo, returning the car (because of issues), and getting an upgrade from the car rental (yay!), I was ready to collapse. Fortunately, the first day on Maui was mostly rainy, because we managed to book our vacation for the tail end of a hurricane.

4: Lily didn't mind being cooped up in the condo—she was more than content to hang out with her new friend, the ceiling fan.

Medium
Large

5: Quite frankly, none of us did…we were all glad of a chance to relax, recuperate from the flight, and adjust to the new timezone.

Medium
Large

6: The next day, after the hurricane had mostly moved on (and a spectacular lightning show overnight), we all went down to the beach. Lily and I are trying to persuade Thomas to come out in the water.

Medium
Large

7: Lily was game for anything, even going back into the scary water, as long as she was with her daddy.

Medium
Large

8: But let's not get crazy here—she was willing to try, but wasn't interested in staying out in the rough (for an infant) surf.

Medium
Large

9: Thomas is going way outside his comfort zone here, but I think he was encouraged by how warm the water was.

Medium
Large

10: This is the only photo I have of him smiling at the beach, but he really was having a good time, despite how he looks in the following pictures.

Medium
Large

11: Thomas had a great time crawling into the surf and letting it push him back. Body-surfing, basically!

Medium
Large

12: Here comes a wave! You can see Elly giggling in the background—she's laughing at me, not Thomas. In order to get these pictures, I had to sacrifice any kind of situational awareness, so the surf was throwing me around like crazy.

Medium
Large

13: See? He's really having a great time!

Medium
Large

14: I'm surprised I have a level horizon here; I think I was going head-over-heels at this point.

Medium
Large

15: Splash!

Medium
Large

16: Really, he truly is having a great time here. I just didn't manage to get too many shots of him smiling. :(

Medium
Large

17: Grandma mostly stayed on the beach, enjoying the sun and the sights.

Medium
Large

18: Thomas eventually moved out of the surf and started digging a hole.

Medium
Large

19: You can see the storm clouds in the background as Grandma holds Lily. The hurricane hadn't quite left the area yet, and we still had surf, winds, and occasional rain.

Medium
Large

20: That night, we took Lily into the swimming pool in the condo complex. No photos from there except for this one, which I thought was charmingly surreal.

Medium
Large

21: The next day, we took a day-long tour of Maui. Our first stop was Haleakala.

Medium
Large

22: That is a lot of meters. No light-headedness to report, but the altitude really did make a difference in oxygen content—I was breathing a lot harder than I normally would when moving around. Kinda neat!

Medium
Large

23: Obligatory karate photo (taken by Thomas!). This is Ananko. The odd buildings in the background are the telescopes on top of Haleakala. (And the more observant of you will have noticed that I've deployed the chin-strap on my trusty Tilley hat—it was windy up there!)

24: Thomas descends the stairs from the observation point.

Medium
Large

25: The colours inside the crater were pretty wild

Medium

26: Thomas hangs loose at the top of Mt. Haleakala

Medium

27: Lily shields her face from the wind

Medium

28: Group photo taken by one of the other members of our tour party.

Medium

29: A rock. (Boring, I know, but look at how cool the lava bubbles are in this! Rock! With bubbles in! So cool!)

Medium
Large

30: We're above the clouds!

Medium
Large

31: The crater is huge. You can get a sense of the scale here; this was shot with a 20mm lens.

Medium
Large

32: We then left the mountain and went to 'Iao Valley

Medium
Large

33: Lush rainforest; very beautiful

Medium
Large

34: A banana leaf

Medium

35: Thomas hikes up the trail to see the 'Iao Needle

40: Detail of the fallen leaf (no, I didn't tweak the colours)

Medium

41: Mom poses in 'Iao Valley

Medium

42: Next stop: Lahaina. Mom poses with a plumeria blossom in her hair.

Medium
Large

43: Leaves in Lahaina

Medium

44: The next day, we went back to the beach, where Thomas did more digging, and Elly built a wall.

Medium
Large

45: Lily is having a good time!

Medium
Large

46: The importance of wearing sunscreen.

Medium
Large

47: Lily has a good time in the condo

Medium
Large

48: This is one seriously happy baby

Medium
Large

49: Smiles!

Medium
Large

50: Kris flew in from Oahu to spend the day!

Medium
Large

51: We went out to eat at Cheeseburgers in Paradise. Lily got a little overheated, so Kris was dripping water into her mouth with a straw.

Medium
Large

52: Whew, we're just burning through the days! The next day, we went back to Lahaina to ride the glass-bottomed boat, and to see a lu'au! But we got there a little early and had some time to kill, so we got ice cream (I had lilkoi sorbet, which was heavenly), and we hooked Mom up with a videoconference with her sister and brother-in-law!

Medium
Large

53: Thomas is having a great time on the glass-bottomed boat!

Medium
Large

54: So is mom

59: Mom had her fish-identifying card at the ready!

Medium
Large

60: Lily would like to eat the reef

Medium
Large

61: Thomas watches the marine life outside the glass-bottomed boat

Medium
Large

62: That evening, after getting off the glass-bottomed boat, we went to a lu'au! Lily had a great time (seriously—she was smiling and engaged the whole two hours)!

Medium
Large

63: Lily and daddy hang loose at the lu'au

Medium
Large

64: I took a quick break from the dancers to go snap a shot of the sunset (the only sunset I managed to see on the whole trip)

Medium
Large

65: Palm trees outside the lu'au

Medium
Large

66: Lily and Elly enjoy the lu'au

Medium
Large

67: Family photo at the lu'au!

68: Thomas posed with one of the dancers after the lu'au

Medium
Large

69: The next day we went shopping for souvenirs

Medium
Large

70: A torch at the shopping mall

Medium
Large

71: A gecko at the shopping mall

Medium
Large

72: The next day (this is the 25th, now) we cut up a pineapple, and gave Lily the core!

Medium
Large

73: Babies, as it turns out, love pineapple

Medium
Large

74: Om nom nom nom!

Medium
Large

75: Yeah, that was one seriously blissed-out baby. Pineapples for the win.

Medium
Large

76: On our last full day, we went to a different beach. Here we see Lily maxin' and relaxin' in our beach tent.

Medium
Large

77: Lily and mommy went wading!

Medium
Large

78: Daddy came too!

Medium
Large

79: The water was calm enough that we could all go out (instead of trading Lily off between us)

Medium
Large

80: Happy baby!

Medium
Large

81: Yup, this is what Hawaii is supposed to be about. Crystal clear waters, palm trees, beaches.

Medium
Large

82: Mom and Thomas spent the day relaxing on the sand

Medium
Large

83: Daddy, where are you going? Come back here!

Medium
Large

84: Splashy baby!

Medium
Large

85: OMG look at that smile

Medium
Large

86: My favourite photo from this trip. :)

Medium
Large

87: The sunglasses and hat worked really well.

Medium
Large

88: Lily and Thomas show off their Hawaiian duds

Medium
Large

89: Just before driving to the airport the next day, we stopped and got a photo of our little hula dancer by the ocean

Medium
Large

90: Lily is excited to be in daddy's seat on the plane ride home

Medium
Large

91: And we're back! Lily and I drove Mom and Thomas home to Longview.

Medium
Large

92: Lily is happy to be back in the Pacific Northwest.
