Kona 2012

Elly and I went to Kona for a quick vacation at the end of February

Saturday, February 25th through Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

1: The first day, we visited the Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area for some obligatory 'on a desert island' photos.

3: There were a number of garden plots tended by local organizations there; one of them had this blossoming plumeria.

4: One of the first sites we visited (after snorkelling, of course!) was a macadamia nut factory in Kawaihae. We cracked and ate raw macadamias, using the nutcracker pictured.

7: Whole macadamias! These are incredibly difficult to open, hence the nutcracker in picture #4.

8: On our way back to our hotel, we stopped at Samuel M. Spencer Beach Park. Very nice, very quiet.

11: I climbed down on the rocks below her and poked around in the tidepools for a bit.

12: We visited the Pu'ukohola Heiau national park, located just above the beach park.

14: On my birthday we went on a tour of coffee plantations! Our first stop was, of course, Kona Blue Sky.

19: While poking around the plantation, we saw this little guy hanging out in a coffee tree. I believe he's an anole.

20: Hey, bud, are you following me?

21: Coffee buds

22: Me, surrounded by coffee trees. :)

23: Elly and me with weird expressions, surrounded by coffee trees. :)

24: Our next stop was Holualoa Kona Coffee. This is their drying floor—you can see freshly-picked cherries in the background, and parchment in the foreground.

25: Coffee cherries…and a few geckoes!

Medium
Large

26: Hey, that's my coffee, buddy!

Medium

27: Gecko foot!

28: Coffee sorter—this is basically a sifter. The screen is vibrated, and the smaller beans fall through to be collected. The larger beans stay on top.

29: One more shot of the sorter.

30: The geckoes were out in force today! This little guy was on the railing as we were walking down to the first floor.

31: Macro shot of the gecko.

32: This is where we were! I didn't end up buying any of their coffee.

33: Next stop, Hula Daddy Coffee. This is a fresh young coffee leaf on their plantation.

Medium
Large

34: A not-so-young leaf. :)

Medium
Large

35: A cupping cup. I would have bought some of their coffee, if they had any green beans to sell. Most places did not, as we were there very late in the season.

36: Our final stop was Mountain Thunder. Great tour. I enjoyed it, Elly enjoyed it, and so did Pumpkin. :)

37: A vibrant hibiscus flower.

38: We took a day to visit Kiluea. This is a benchmark at the Kiluea Iki crater.

42: We stopped at a lava tube. It was very lush, and I could not resist the water beading up on plants.

Medium
Large

43: The droplets were really spectacular.

Medium

44: Elly obliged me with a pose under a gigantic fern.

46: On the morning of our final day, we stopped at the Kaloko Honokohau national park on the way to the airport.

47: Elly walks across the lava on the beach.

48: I haven't been able to figure out what kind of bird this is, but he had stunning red eyes.

Medium
Large

49: Honu!

Medium
Large

50: We found her resting on the beach.

Medium
Large

51: I was careful not to disturb her, but she didn't really seem to care that I was there.

Medium

52: Now with colour!

Medium
Large

53: Elly looks like she had a good time. :)
